Our Remote Area Medical Mission programme contributes to our strategic objective of facilitating improvements in the health status of the deprived, with a focus on women and children.

First Intervention Ghana undertakes key healthcare activities that promote the health of our target communities, protect them from infectious diseases and offer basic health care services for their ailments.

This is expected to increase the life expectancy, reduce infant mortality, and improve maternal health of our target communities and thereby enabling them to overcome the fears that drive them into bondage.

Below are some intervention activities:

Our YoungCare Programme contributes to our strategic objective of facilitating improvements in the health status of the deprived, with a focus on women and children. We undertake primary healthcare activities that promote the health of our communities, protect them from infectious diseases and offer basic health care services for their ailments.

This is expected to increase the life expectancy, reduce infant mortality, and improve maternal health of our communities and thereby enabling them to overcome the fears that drive them into bondage.

Under this area of our work, we provide free medical care to all kids in the communities where we operate. Twice every year, medical teams are organized to run clinics for all our communities to ensure that school children are healthy and sound.

We also organize used clothes, books and bags for school children. Our organization’s volunteers paint schools and construct urinals and many more.

Basic First Aid Programme: Injury accounts for 16% of the global burden of disease. As one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide, it overwhelmingly affects low and middle income countries.

Evidence has shown that deaths are prevented and disability averted for conditions such as trauma, pregnancy, myocardial infarction, stroke and sepsis by upgrading the emergency services.

Pre-hospital care research in developing countries has, to a large extent, focused on trauma. Mortality from severe injury occurs in one of the following three phases:
1)Immediate phase occurs as a result of overwhelming injury
2) Intermediate or sub-acute phase involves deaths occurring within several hours of the event and are potentially treatable.
3) Delayed phase when deaths often occur days or weeks after the initial injury.

In remote areas such quick medical response services can be seen. Patients commuting to major cities from remote areas are most vulnerable. They often do not have any means of transportation and have to travel on foot without any first aid.

In view of the First Intervention Ghana organizes basic first aid for adults and youth in these remote areas whenever medical mission is organized.

First Intervention Ghana (FIG) is a Ghanaian based health and community voluntary non profit organization which develops short and long term volunteer programs in rural communities that encourage people to immerse themselves in a unique way of giving back. Volunteers help to empower the host communities in creating renewable, sustainable programs.

While FIG’s financial assistance benefits the community economically, it is actually the involvement and collaboration between the volunteers and community that is the greatest mutual benefit FIG is an organization which focuses on creating self-reliance among the rural communities with which we work.

Every activity in which we engage is intended to accomplish one of two things: promote cultural awareness and/or promote sustainability. The concept of sustainability is to help others stand on their own feet; to teach skills to others.

The Cross Culture and Education Service Program was founded on the principles of

Under these principles, the program strives to accomplish two principal objectives.

• Create a wide variety of learning opportunities for student/volunteer interns.
• They will better understand diverse cultures and develop intercultural skills.

To recover fully from a disease or illness is the desire of all persons. It is always wished that whenever one recovers from a disease, there is the surety that one comes back to his or her normal self. However, the situation is not always so. Leprosy is one of the diseases feared by mankind. In the past people with such diseases were looked down upon, maltreated, and even banished, since it is a communicable disease. This was so, because they had no cure for it until 1940.

In Ghana, the situation has not changed much, due to the disease’s communicability there is a special home for infected people. Their helplessness make them dependent on government and society to live, at least, decent lives, however they do not always get the needed help.

Leprosy is a disease caused by a rod-shaped bacillus called Mycobacterium Leprae or M-Leprae which affects the skin and nerves. It is transmitted through air via droplets from the nose and mouth during close and frequent contact with untreated infected individual.

Mixing, touching and hugging patients at the leprosarium to tell the world that leprosy is not an infectious disease nor is it hereditary, even though through the effort of governments’ leprosy had decline in countries like Ghana, about six million cured leprosy patients in the world faced discrimination and stigmatization.

This is very worrying and recklessness against the use of derogatory terms such as lepers or its equivalent in other languages. Those patients should not be referred to by the disease but by their names, adding that cured patients and their families should be acknowledged as people who are part of society.

Discrimination is one of the oldest forms and most pervasive examples of social injustice in the history of the human race. Millions of men, women and children continue to suffer social, economic and legal discrimination, simply because they or a member of their family has leprosy.

As part of our strategic plan and quest to reduce vulnerability, mitigate needless discrimination and respond appropriately to the need of the cured lepers, a partnership needs to be formed with strategic organization like yours to equip us with necessary support to bring back smile to the faces of the cured but rejected.

Central Region, Ghana – November 13, 2010 – First Intervention Ghana a voluntary aid organization, is putting a twist on bringing smiles to rural kids. Let Your Hand Opens a Mind, Touches a Heart and Shapes a Future of rural poor child today and put a smile on the face of poor child tomorrow

This year, an estimated 1,500 rural kids from nine (9) communities in the Central Region in Ghana will receive free services in the upcoming

‘Young Care Programme- a medical outreach for rural poor children.

First Intervention Ghana operates with the dedicated nurses and other allied health professions, serving the poor in Central Region. The programs offered when visited the communities range from life changing education, wound dressing, blood pressure screening and other related life threatening issues for individuals free of charge.

In addition to treating children with wounds the Young Care Programme Team, take time to teach mothers how to take care of their wards wounds to prevent the condition from deteriorating. During a recent field service in Gomoa Buduatta in Central Region, Ghana, in West Africa, Miss Becky( Volunteer Nurse)  spoke to parents of kids in the community on the use of hot water  and other concoctions  on wound dressing and the covering wound. Many of them had thought that hot water was the best method for wound dressing.

Ms. Becky advised the mothers that, uncovered wounds will attract germs and increase pains to the child. She then showed them how to manage children wound, and answered questions from the mothers.

Young Care Programme Team believes that children in rural communities are more tolerant to pain in a dressing room compared to children in the cities. The team has provided wound treatment for hundreds of children in Central Region. Most people would not think that kids would get a smile while being in a dressing room. Sometimes, however, the treatment they receive alleviates their pain’s.

Miss Catherine (Volunteer Nurse) is a vital member of the Young Care Programme team, and she encourages prevention through wounds management instructions in the communities served by First Intervention Ghana.Almost all the children wound dressings are done by her.

Wound management education for  mothers at a point will help decrease deteriorating wounds in the future. The First Intervention Ghana medical team provides healthcare education and information at every mission/outreach.  The team hopes that, through prevention, the amount of deterioration and swelling  will decrease. Correct wound management practice can prevent extraction and reduce pains down the road.

Volunteers Saving Lives!

1. COMMUNITY MEDICAL OUTREACH CAMP: February – March, 2010

As a key component of our rural healthcare system, First Intervention Ghana supports its community through community medical screening camps with the aim of improving the health life of the local vulnerable people. A two day medical screening camp was organized for the 395 inhabitants of Amissano Community at KEEA District in Central Region-Ghana. The exercise was sponsored by Hardy Bauer (Paramedic volunteer) and his wife-Guiana, from Germany and supported by First Intervention Ghana.

2. COMMUNITY BASIC FIRST AID EDUCATION: February, 2010

The worse in disaster is when those with the necessary knowledge and skills to manage the situation is fewer than the victims. Baseline survey conducted by National Road Safety Commission-Ghana indicates that most of casualties can be saved from needless deaths if proper First Aid is administered to accident victims along highways, especially Central Region.

In most cases many of these deaths and injuries according to the Commission may have less impact if medical people with requisite First Aid Knowledge administered pre-clinical care immediately.

The programme was initiated to sensitize drivers the need to promote and preserve lives in the community and on road through first aid. About 89 commercial drivers and station officers at Komenda Branch-GPRTU participated in first aid for road crashes injuries and road signs education at Komenda.

The project was funded by First Intervention Ghana and supported by Road Safety Commission and Red Cross Ghana in Central Region-Cape Coast.

3. YOUNG CARE PROGRAMME: 16^TH OCTOBER, 2010

Medical Outreach for Rural Poor Children!

This is an initiative to reduce ill-health and administer quality healthcare to the rural poor children through a programme of intervention in health and education. The programme also aims to help children living in poverty by giving them love, hope and care. FIG believes that children are the future and therefore, they need to be care for and smile always.

First Intervention Ghana in collaborations with Wofa Yaw a philanthropist and supported by a team of nurses and doctors organized a medical screening as part of YOUNG CARE PROGRAMME for the people of Aboom, Siwdu and Compound communities in Cape Coast.

The outreach screened Malaria, Blood Pressure, Wound Dressing and delivered health talk on Blood Pressure.

The programme even-though was purposely meant for children, the adult, aged and youth were also screened.310 people were screened and out of these 119 were adults, 77 youths, 21 aged, and 93 children were catered for in the health areas above.

The programme record 93 malaria cases for both adult and children, and 92 people had their blood pressure monitored. Out of these, 33 high blood pressures and 14 low blood pressures were recorded.

The six hours programme was sponsored by Wofa Yaw of Aboom, Siwdu and Compound Electoral Area in Cape Coast and supported by First Intervention Ghana, Red Cross Ghana-Cape Coast, Nurses and Doctors, Ashgin Pharmacy and The Carbin Restaurant.
